Allergies, Relief, and Easy Essential Oil Recipes
I have become a BIG proponent of essential oils since I tried some for getting rid of headaches and migraines. So, far it has about a 95% success rate for me. So, when I realized that I have reached a new level of allergy hell this year I started thinking that maybe essential oils could help.
I am pleased to report that I am absolutely stunned at how well it works. I can breathe again. Pretty much immediately. Yesterday I couldn’t breath through my nose and was headachey. Today I smell minty fresh and can breath.
Some oils need a carrier oil. This means a neutral oil mixed with it 1:1 to make sure it doesn’t irritate your skin. If you aren’t used to using oils, you might want to do a little patch test to make sure you won’t have a reaction. Me? I slather it all over my face and chest and am happy I did it. Results may vary.
I think it is important to note that I have read some places online mention you can take them internally. I asked the woman at the health food store and she said “no”. She said they were taught not to do that in school. So, I’m going to believe her. Don’t ingest.
- Carrier Oils: I like almond oil just fine, but you can also use coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil.
- Lemon Essential Oil: Works as a natural antihistamine, relieves excess mucus, and cools down the inflammation which is the result of an allergic reaction. Works best in combination with lavender and peppermint.
- Lavender Essential Oil: Works as a natural antihistamine and possess strong anti-inflammatory properties to treat and relieve most allergic reactions. Works great to treat skin rashes or headaches. And not only will it ease your allergic reaction, it has a calming and relaxing effect on body and mind, and smells great.
- Peppermint Essential Oil: Has a strong, fresh, and minty aroma that works wonders to treat allergic reactions. Especially those that cause respiratory or digestive issues. It has pain-relieving, soothing, cooling, and has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to open the airways, improves breathing and eases congestion.
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Supports the respiratory system and is well known to ease seasonal allergies and asthma attacks. Eucalyptus is most effective when applied topically or when used as a steam inhalation.
You can mix and match all of these. See two recipes below. Right now, I don’t have a favorite. Both of these seem to work really well to provide immediate relief.
Allergy Recipe 1
- 2-3 drops Lemon Oil
- 2-3 drops Lavender Oil
- 2-3 drops Peppermint Oil
- 6-9 drops Carrier Oil
Mix together in your hand. Rub on forehead, cheeks, neck, chest, etc. or wherever you want it where you can breath it in.
Allergy Recipe 2
- 2-3 drops Eucalyptus Oil
- 2-3 drops Lavender Oil
- 2-3 drops Peppermint Oil
- 6-9 drops Carrier Oil
Mix together in your hand. Rub on forehead, cheeks, neck, chest, etc. or wherever you want it where you can breath it in.
While I’ve had mixed outcomes with the headache oils, (I think it just depends what kind of headache I have) one use we put them to that Lena doesn’t mention was the time I had shingles. I don’t recall what the mix was, but I went from full-on screaming pain to complete relief… instantly.
Ever since then I have been willing to try whatever remedy Lena cooks up, with much better than average results. AND I love the way the oils smell!
Paul’s had shingles, too. It’s my understanding that if you’ve had them once, you are more susceptible to another bout. So this is especially great news to hear. For anyone who has ever suffered shingles … they suck, and knowing there is relief out there is fantastic.
A friend of ours, well his wife, she got shingles in her eyes. I can’t even imagine. She was hospitalized for near a week.
I have one other friend who is a major proponent of essential oils. I am all about remedies that don’t involve the use of pharma derived drugs.

I was reading up to see if I could remember which oil it was. Seems like it might have been peppermint or lavender. But if you search for “Essential Oils Shingles” in Google you’ll find lots of recipes. I’m sure there are multiples that work.
I seem to recall that Shingles is basically chicken pox. So, if you get it “again” then you are one of those people who can get it again. It often happens during a period of stress. Which Kevin was. His grandmother had it around the same time.
I’m so glad you’ve tried essential oils for migraines! I was “prescribed” lavender and rosemary oil years ago for mine, and I have found nothing more effective, if you recognize early on that you’re headed for a migraine (and let’s face it, when you get them regularly you just KNOW) and start therapy. I just swipe some under my nose, and if it’s really bad, on my temples, and it always, always helps.
